The
Dark Angels are a very special open baffle (OB) three way design.
Measuring flat to 27 Hz in most rooms they are genuinely full range and
yet also capable of producing the most open & textured bass/low midrange
imaginable. As the big brother to the Angels, the Dark Angels go lower in
the bass with more power and authority in the low midrange.
Higher SPL’s are available at all frequencies with
lower distortion. The crossover frequencies are 100Hz bass to low midrange
and 300Hz, 350Hz or 400Hz from low midrange to the Prey head units. The
Dark Angels are very easy to place in most rooms as their superior
radiation characteristics generate 50% less of the undesirable off axis
sound found in conventional box designs.
Another major advantage of our unique variable path
length cancellation cabinet design is avoiding all the cuppy tunnel
distortions found in conventional deep sided open baffle or “H” frame
designs. We genuinely have the best of both worlds, all the speed, detail
and naturally box free qualities of OB combined with the power & image
solidarity of sealed box designs.
Our proprietary OB 12 inch bass driver has a specially
stiffened & treated lightweight cone perfectly suited for demanding high
power low distortion OB applications. We had to balance the electrical &
mechanical specifications of the driver with the variable path length
dimensions of the cabinet sides and dial in just the right level of
digital EQ using the Conductor crossover. We are especially proud having
managed to keep the Dark Angel cabinet dimensions close to the very slim
and sexy Angel cabinets.
Even open baffle designs can not escape the laws of
physics. "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction"
So we deliberately increased the cabinet mass of the Dark Angels by nearly
40% to balance the increase in the moving mass (MMS) of the drivers. In
2002, when we started developing the Encore bass system, we made a very
important discovery. There is a clearly defined ratio of required cabinet
mass to the moving mass of pistonic drivers. We discovered that 500:1 is
the minimum figure required to generate "true bass" with power & dynamics
whilst maintaining focus and image solidarity. Also we learned that the
entire bass cabinet must be equally inert and massive. The
conventional method building a light weight 30Kg box and pouring in
another 30 Kg of sand or bolting a lead weight to the base does not work!
For example our Encore 12 inch bass driver with it's 4
inch voice coil has a MMS of 95g so it needs a minimum cabinet mass of
47.5Kg, securely anchored to a solid floor, to generate detailed textured
bass with real power and slam.
Being Overkill Audio we carried on down the R&D road
developing the unique 33 layer construction (weighing 90Kg not including
Sistrum stand or Prey head unit!) that is the Encore bass cabinet.
The Dark Angels are available in our beautiful
Moonstone (a Corian type synthetic stone) as well as solid hardwoods and
our sumptuous piano black gloss finish.
