"And then it became Overkill... and the best sound at the show was
achieved by a clear margin. -

The Encore is the ultimate two way speaker
and a true full range time and phase coherent design.
They can fill very large rooms with
lifelike music and movie soundtracks at realistic SPL’s without the need
for any sub woofers. They are also beautifully adaptable and can play
magically at any volume in small to medium rooms.
The unique dispersion characteristics of
the infinitely adjustable Prey head units combined with our digital
crossover/EQ allows the speakers to be placed very close to side and rear
walls.
The proprietary 12” bass driver features a
4” voice coil and a 9.5 Kg symmetrical field magnet. The lightening fast
Bl to MMS ratio combined with the massive (90Kg) and acoustically inert
bass cabinet gives amazing results. Hugely powerful, yet textured and
detailed, the ultra low distortion bass always sound tight and agile.
Dedicated to covering 24Hz up to 300Hz this heroic cabinet construction
and state of the art 12” bass driver make a formidable combination. . In
2002, when we started developing the Encore bass system, we made a very
important discovery. There is a clearly defined ratio of required cabinet
mass to the moving mass of pistonic drivers. We discovered that 500:1 is
the minimum figure required to generate "true bass" with power & dynamics
whilst maintaining focus and image solidarity. Also we learned that the
entire bass cabinet must be equally inert and massive. The conventional
method building a light weight 30Kg box and pouring in another 30 Kg of
sand or bolting a lead weight to the base does not work!
For example our Encore 12 inch bass driver
with it's 4 inch voice coil has a MMS of 95g so it needs a minimum cabinet
mass of 47.5Kg, securely anchored to a solid floor, to generate detailed
textured bass with real power and slam.
Being Overkill Audio we carried on down the
R&D road developing the unique 33 layer construction (weighing 90Kg not
including Sistrum stand or Prey head unit!) that is the Encore bass
cabinet.
Above 300 Hz the Prey head units take
over. Using our DSP linear phase, 96dB per octave crossover, the
Conductor seamlessly balances the drivers preserving true time and phase
coherence. The custom Sorbothane mounting pad provides the ideal support
for the Prey whilst allowing freedom to tilt and turn the head unit for
optimal acoustic positioning.
Our Self Damping Compound (SDC), used
exclusively for the Prey head units, is the key to their dynamic
and natural sound quality. It has taken us 3 years to refine and perfect
the SDC. The same meticulous care and attention is lavished on the
construction of the resin based Prey as the multi layered Birch ply bass
cabinets.
Sistrum SP101 platforms are included with
the Encore speakers as they are integral to the cabinet design. The
platforms are height adjustable and, like the matching equipment racks,
are beautifully machined.
